A delegation from the University of West Bohemia (UWB) visited two Nigerian universities to expand academic cooperation and submit an Erasmus+ project proposal aimed at strengthening the capacities of local universities. Starting in 2025, UWB plans to launch PhD training programs in technical fields and lecture series to support African industry.
The three-member delegation from UWB in Pilsen, consisting of representatives from the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and the New Technology - Research Centre (NTC), visited the University of Lagos and the University of Abuja in mid-September 2024. The delegation included Jan Záhořík, Martin Melichar and Luděk Hynčík. The main goal of their visit was to promote cooperation between Czech and African universities in the fields of education and research.
In recent years, the African continent has experienced rapid economic growth, attracting investments from around the world, including support from European Union programs. Given these changes, Africa’s industrial sector is seeking experts to meet the demands of the growing market. "During the meetings, UWB proposed collaboration within the Erasmus+ Capacity Building project, aimed at strengthening academic capacities with a focus on competitiveness and sustainability in the region," said Luděk Hynčík from NTC.
An important part of the agreement is the launch of intensive lecture activities and PhD training programs in 2025, particularly in technical and engineering fields. This initiative aims to prepare specialists who can contribute to the continued growth of African industry. Associate Professor Záhořík was also invited to the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, where he delivered a presentation on Czech-African relations, further strengthening cultural and academic ties between the two countries.
This initiative is part of UWB’s broader plan to collaborate with universities in other African countries such as Rwanda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, supported by the Erasmus+ credit mobility program. These activities align with the Czech Republic's Africa Strategy and reaffirm UWB’s commitment to global education and research.
