University

Get to know the news from the university publishing house of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Which books have been published recently? What new ones are coming? Which promotional item is the most popular? And what can the publishing house offer to authors?

Among the new titles available for students, staff and the public, there is the second edited and expanded edition of the publication by the author team from the Department of Pedagogy’s work of the Faculty of Education Reflexe a hodnocení kvality výuky I. The text is intended to guide its readers – future teachers – to continuously reflect on and improve the quality of didactic work with pupils in the classroom.

The recently published publication Kolejová vozidla IV by the authors' team from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is a continuation of the previous three volumes. One of the authors, Petr Heller, specified what the latest volume is about: "The publication covers couplers, collectors, power transmissions, railway vehicle testing, and the tram vehicle envelope." He added: "Thanks to the support of several companies, the book is also affordable for readers. I was also very pleased to see that two of the previous volumes are now used in vocational schools."

In a new book by Milan Hrdlička from the Department of Czech Languag at the Faculty of Education, Po stopách čepeřice kropenaté: blogy (nejen) o češtině, readers can read the author's blogs published in the online periodical iDNES.cz between 2021 and 2024. Some of them present interesting features and aspects of the use of the Czech language in a novel way, some of the texts are humorous, consisting of stories and experiences more or less connected with the teaching of our mother tongue in the world.

All these and other books can be purchased at the UWB e-shop (e-shop.zcu.cz). In the book offer, however, you can also find, for example, selected publications from the Grada publishing house or books about the Pilsen region from the Starý most publishing house.

And what can you look forward to in the near future? The authors' team led by František Vondrášek, Zdeněk Peroutka and Tomáš Glasberger from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering are finishing the preparation of a comprehensive publication Výkonová elektronika. The book is a comprehensive publication on the components, principles and applications of power semiconductor converters. It is designed as a university textbook, but will also serve professionals in the field.

The second year of the Veleslavín Literary Competition is mapped out in a collection prepared at the Department of Czech Language of the Faculty of Education. The editor, Růžena Písková, considers the collection to be "an important testimony of the youngest generations about the society in which our children live and create. The Veleslavín Literary Competition is not just a banal school competition full of sterile, pink-painted school texts, but a means of serious social intergenerational dialogue." Those who are looking forward to the book can already read the winning texts from last year's competition.

The monograph Instituty správního práva s odkazem na dílo profesora Hoetzela was written by a team of Czech and Slovak university teachers working at law faculties and other universities where administrative law is taught. The occasion was the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Professor Jiří Hoetzel, who can be described as one of the most important theoreticians and legal practitioners in the field of public law in the first half of the twentieth century. In the summary of the book, the authors write: "The book shows the shifts in contemporary and modern understanding of the functions of public administration and discusses what of Hoetzel's theoretical interpretation of individual institutes has withstood the influence of time and given room for further elaboration in later times. It also examines other topical issues, which could also be drawn from sources written at the time when the foundations of administrative law were being laid."

The popular textbooks from the Faculty of Economics Statistické zpracování dat and Základy statistiky a pravděpodobnosti will be reprinted in the near future.

The publishing house provides authors from the university, or even authors from the public, with comprehensive publishing services including: peer review, proofreading services and translations, pre-press editing of publications and graphic work, printing of publications, assignment of ISBNs and DOIs, methodological assistance in applying for ISSNs, distribution of required copies to libraries, publishing and distribution of e-books, sale of printed publications and promotional items of the University of West Bohemia and the online plagiarism checker Similarity Check for editors of university journals.

In addition to the library, there is also a university shop on the ground floor, which offers books and university promotional items. Here you can choose t-shirts with faculty colours, a thermos, a student rolling backpack or even tin cans. "A hit these days is the handy JIS-sized card holder. Also popular is the brisk card game POSTŘEH! or a hoodie with a kangaroo and hood printed with the university logo," said Lucie Semrádová, a shop assistant. The shop is open from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 11:30 and from 12:30 to 15:00.
