The Plzeň photography symposium will offer three exhibitions, vernissages and international artists

Press Release Public Exhibition

The Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art is organising the 11th international photography symposium entitled Boundaries.

This year, the symposium will be followed by three exhibitions at the Ladislav Sutnar Gallery and the GAFA and Entrée galleries, which will be open to the public until the end of December.

The theme of this year’s symposium is stories and metastories, identification and alter egos, reality and fiction, reconstruction and deconstruction, process and time. That is why this year’s Boundaries has the subtitle “Biography”.

“According to the literary critic and academic Hermione Lee, we view history through a lens that is a product of contemporary society, which results in a constant shifting of biographical truths. Biography is therefore a revival of someone’s life seen through the prism of the social and political climate and the personal convictions of the biographer,” explains Jan Van Woensel, curator of the Ladislav Sutnar Gallery and since 2018 the curator of the symposium.

From Wednesday 30 November to Friday 2 December the public can look forward to three vernissages, international guests and lectures. The Czech Republic will be represented by two up-and-coming artists, Zuzana-Markéta Macková and Max*ine Vajt. The international artists are Michael Mersinis (Greece/Scotland), Peter Pflügler (Austria/Netherlands), Mariia Ralemska (Ukraine), Ross Sawyers (USA), Oxiea Villamonte (USA/Netherlands) and Stefan Vanthuyne (Belgium).

The lectures are open to students as well as the general public. The lectures will take place in the Multilab on the ground floor of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art.

The symposium is accompanied by three exhibitions. The exhibition of the symposium’s international guests entitled Boundaries: Biography, will be shown at the Ladislav Sutnar Gallery in Riegrova Street in Plzeň until 23 December. The vernissage will take place on 1 December from 6 p.m. and the openings of the other two exhibitions will take place at the conclusion of the symposium programme.

The opening of Marie Plná’s Impostor will follow directly after the lectures in the Entrée Gallery located in the building of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, from 3:30 p.m. It will also be on display until 23 December. The third exhibition, Rozálie Skalová’s Anywhere You Need, will be installed in the GAFA Gallery in the DEPO2015 creative zone and will be open until 4 December. The opening is on 1 December at 5 p.m.

The project was launched by the current dean of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, Vojtěch Aubrecht. The title, Boundaries, reflects the original aim of the project – to make visible and reflect on the formal and conceptual identity of photography by creating a dynamically developing collective of artists, photographers and students. Since its founding in 2012, the project has fostered a personal approach and created an inclusive community of shared expertise.
