New UWB Rector Miroslav Lávička Inaugurated

The new rector of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen was inaugurated on 5 April. At the ceremonial inauguration in the Měšťanská beseda in Pilsen, he received the insignia of the office of rector and took the oath of office. He will lead the University until the end of February 2027.

During the inauguration ceremony, Rector Miroslav Lávička received the Rector’s chain and sceptre, insignia symbolising the powers of the office entrusted to him by the academic community of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Then the Rector took the oath of office and delivered his inaugural speech.

“It is essential for the development of the University to not only respond to the external environment, but also raise issues and actively contribute to transformation of the city and region,” said Rector Miroslav Lávička during the inauguration at the Měšťanská beseda in Pilsen, attended by representatives of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, the regions, the city of Pilsen, rectors and other guests from academia, cooperating companies and political and public life. “Without a doubt, the current environment and climate of rapid change is creating a sense of uncertainty, confusion and instability in society. I am convinced that for this reason, the importance of education will continue to grow even more in the coming years,” said the Rector.

During the ceremony, the Chairman of the UWB Academic Senate Pavel Karban thanked the previous Rector Miroslav Holeček who had led the UWB for two terms from March 2015. Rector Emeritus Miroslav Holeček provided an overview of the most important events from the eight years that he had spent as the head of the UWB. He noted the great influence that universities have on the young generation and their responsibility for the future of our world.

Speeches were also made by Bishop Emeritus František Radkovský, the Governor of the Pilsen Region Rudolf Špoták, the Mayor of Pilsen Roman Zarzycký and the Governor of the Karlovy Vary Region Petr Kulhánek. Music was performed by the Consortium Musicum led by Vít Aschenbrenner from the Faculty of Education, University of West Bohemia.

Prof. RNDr. Miroslav Lávička, Ph.D., is the sixth rector of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. He assumed office on 1 March, following his election by the Academic Senate of the UWB on 21 December 2022 and his appointment by the President of the Republic Miloš Zeman on 15 February 2023.

Miroslav Lávička graduated as a teacher of mathematics and chemistry for secondary schools from the Faculty of Education at the UWB and continued his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University. In 2011, he gained his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at the UWB and in 2020 was appointed Professor in the same field. Since 2002, he has been working in the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the UWB; before that, he worked at the Faculty of Education. In 2012–2014, he was the Vice-Dean for Creative Activities and External Relations of the Faculty of Applied Sciences; in 2014–2017 he served as its Dean and in 2017–2020 as the Vice-Dean for Strategy and Legislation.
