Further Education Students Public
Throughout the program, which was filled with interactive lectures, workshops, and exercises, young students earned a special summer currency called "Spořílek" as a reward for their activity. They later used this currency in a final auction where items from the summer school's partners were offered.
The lessons focused on key economic areas with an emphasis on misinformation and cybersecurity. Other interesting topics included unfair practices, consumer rights and protection, and social media.
As in previous years, the organizers of the summer school were pleasantly surprised by the participants' enthusiasm and involvement, regardless of their age. "I consider this year's school theme to be very timely," said Petr Janeček, one of the summer school's organizers. "For next year, we are considering focusing on regional economics, including its connection to tourism."
Students also engaged in various physical activities, as the summer school is not just about sitting in classrooms. Thursday was designated for an excursion, which this year took place at the university campus in Bory (visits from police officers, a walk through geological sites, and a tour of the RTI Faculty of Mechanical Engineering laboratories). In Cheb, in addition to a lecture by representatives of the Czech Police, there was also a visit to the planetarium.
On Friday, participants experienced what it feels like to take state exams. This year's final projects involved creating deceptive advertisements and convincing the committee of the truthfulness of student-created fake news. Successful graduates, aged seven to fifteen, then had a ceremonial graduation at both locations in Pilsen and Cheb.
"I am glad that the participants of the summer school were introduced to and practically mastered various ways of detecting misinformation," stated Emil Vacík, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Economics, at the graduation ceremony. "I hope that the participants had a pleasant and meaningful week at our faculty and will share some interesting insights with their friends."
We look forward to welcoming more participants in the upcoming fourteenth edition. More information about the Homo Economicus Summer School can be found on its website.
