Excursions, lectures, meetings with interesting personalities, and bike trips. Students from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of West Bohemia were also present at Temelín during the summer holidays.

This year, the Temelín Summer University welcomed approximately 30 students from Czech technical universities, primarily from the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry, and nuclear physics. Among them were Tomáš Kadavý and Petr Vastl, students in the master's program in Nuclear Power Plant Construction at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.

At Temelín, from July 21 to August 2, they participated in a packed two-week program that included tours of the nuclear power plant accompanied by its employees with expert commentary, lectures, and a leisure program. Among the lecturers were the doyenne of Czech nuclear energy, Dana Drábová, the director of the Temelín power plant, Jan Kruml, who is also an alumnus of our faculty, and Bohdan Zronek, the director of the nuclear energy division at ČEZ.

In their free time, the students mostly engaged in cycling around the power plant and visiting nearby sites – the destinations of the bike trips included, for example, the electric substation, the Hněvkovice pumping station, and others. The summer university students also visited a brewery, a theater, and went rock climbing (via ferrata). "We were accommodated at a rowing club on the banks of the Vltava River in Týn nad Vltavou, so there was also beach volleyball and swimming. It was really a great group of people; you make a lot of friends there and meet future colleagues in the field," says Tomáš.

The summer university is organized by ČEZ every year, and participants go through a strict selection process, just like the plant’s employees. "You apply in the spring, and I definitely recommend it. It’s extremely interesting even for students in other fields besides energy – for instance, for material engineering students from our faculty. Among other things, you can also receive a job offer upon graduation and a scholarship," Tomáš continues and adds, "I personally passed the psychological tests for a very interesting and specific position as an operator of the secondary circuit of a nuclear power plant. I accepted the offer, so the summer university was very successful for me."

His thanks go to all the employees of the power plant who dedicated their time to the participants of the Summer University – particularly to Pavel Šimák, Josef Kaňkovský, and Romana Balounová.
