Castles, chicken coops and entire villages: Tomáš Duchek from UWB participated in the Kingdom Come

How do you breathe life into a castle ruin to make it look like it did in its glory days in a computer game, or what does it take to break into the games industry? These were not the only topics of conversation on the university's radio station Wéčko with Tomas Duchek from FDU.

Czech computer game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which has recently premiered, has been hailed by gamers, including foreign ones, as the best video game set in the Middle Ages. One of those who have contributed to the successful game since the first part is Tomáš Duchek from the Faculty of Design and Art of Ladislav Sutnar at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (FDU UWB). As an illustrator, he has made his mark in the creation of the game, especially on the designs of the environments.

"In my opinion, it is the best way to look into the Middle Ages. No other medium offers such a deep and true experience. The player gets to see what it was like at the time and can literally experience the Middle Ages," said Tomas Duchek when asked why the game is so popular both here and abroad.

"I started with the creation of the environment, i.e. the reconstruction of the villages - including how the chicken coops would be laid out, where the watercourses would be in the courtyards and so on - then the castles and also some marketing materials. We had a historian who kept us within bounds to stay true to reality while we were creating," Duchek said. In the game, players will visit various places in our republic, such as the Sázava Monastery or the castles Talmberk and Trosky.

And what does a typical day look like for an illustrator working on a computer game? "Most of the time it's just sitting at the computer, drawing on a graphics tablet, which is a kind of plate that senses the movement of the pen and its pressure. Then, of course, there are moments when we go to the specific locations and take pictures of the locations, but that was included in the first stage of preparation, later it was about the painting," continued Tomáš Duchek.
