On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, the official presentation of the newly opened industrial robotics laboratory took place for the partners of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The event was attended by representatives of Faculty's strategic partners and significant laboratory equipment suppliers, namely Rohde & Schwarz, Valeo, ZF Engineering, the general equipment supplier ABB, and Zimmer, along with the partner Konplan. Among the guests were Vítězslav Lukáš, General Manager of ABB for the Czech Republic and Director of the Robotics and Automation Division for all of Europe, as well as Roman Majerský, Managing Director of Zimmer s.r.o., a subsidiary of Zimmer Group.

The new robotics laboratory offers students not only the opportunity to develop technical thinking and implement their own ideas in the field of robotics but also to experiment with the latest collaborative robots, explore automation possibilities, and gain practical experience, thus better preparing for their future professional careers.

In his opening remarks, Dean Zdeněk Peroutka of FEE UWB focused on the theme "Robotics at FEL - current state and strategic plan for the next 10 years" and introduced the goals and plans of the Faculty in the field of industrial robotics. During the presentation of the industrial robotics laboratory, practical demonstrations showcased all the robotic systems available in the new laboratory. These included collaborative robots GoFa from ABB, equipped with grippers from Zimmer Group, the dual-arm robot YuMi from ABB, and the transport system XPlanar from Beckhoff.

Zdeněk Kehl, the head of the new laboratory, then explained in detail the main reasons for building the laboratory: "The main intention is to expand the study focuses for students, which is also related to the planned new subject Robotics starting from the academic year 2024/2025. The laboratory will also support the education of high school students through events such as ScienceFEL, which took place last December in the newly opened robotic laboratory." The laboratory's facilities are also available to support the education of high school teachers in industrial robotics. The new robotics laboratory will thus provide a wide range of opportunities for multiple target groups.

"We are pleased that we had the opportunity to meet with our industrial partners, discuss future goals, and jointly present the industrial robotics laboratory at Faculty of Electrical Engineering UWB," concluded Dean Zdeněk Peroutka.

The laboratory will be accessible to the general public during the Open Day, which will take place at UWB on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, from 8 am to 3 pm. Come and take a look!
