Donors can bring new books or books in good condition published after 2000 to the branches of the UWB University Library. This year, the titles will bring joy to the clients of the Domov Harmonie in Mirošov, which provides care for the elderly and people with memory and orientation disorders. "Considering who the books are intended for, this year we will especially appreciate romantic fiction and crime novels," said Miloslava Faitová, director of the UWB University Library.
The books should be ones that donors themselves would enjoy reading to pass the time. "We have one central library and smaller libraries on each floor. Our clients use them a lot and are already looking forward to more new titles," added Markéta Polívková, head of the activities department at Domov Harmonie. The collection fittingly begins on February 14, which, in addition to being Valentine’s Day, is also International Book Giving Day.
This year, the library will continue its successful tradition for the eighth time. Last year saw the highest number of books collected in history—nearly 3,200. They were donated to the Domov sv. Zdislavy, where books serve mothers with children and pregnant women with dependent children up to 26 years old who find themselves in difficult social situations due to domestic violence, marital crises, or generational problems within the family. In previous years, donors have also brought joy to patients at the Psychiatric Clinic of the University Hospital in Pilsen, clients of the non-profit organization Close Neighbor, which provides leisure activities for children and families from disadvantaged areas in Pilsen, and inmates at Bory Prison.
Between February 14 and 28, librarians will collect books at the UWB University Library branch in the Bory campus, Art and Law Library at Sady Pětatřicátníků 16, Education and Health Care Library at Klatovská 51, and the Economics Library in Cheb at Hradební Street 22.
