“Welcome back to the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen,” said Rector Miroslav Lávička to the delegation of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) led by H. E. Liang-Ruey Ke, Taiwan’s highest representative in the Czech Republic. Mr Ke together with the director of TECO’s Science and Technology Department, Hong-Wei Yen, had visited the UWB about a year ago; on this visit, they mainly learned about the professional activities of the RICE Research Centre of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

The objective of this year’s visit, which took place on Thursday 29 June, was to continue ongoing negotiations, some of which had started during the recent trip of the UWB delegation headed by Rector Miroslav Lávička to Taiwan, as well as to present other specialised departments of the UWB. On behalf of the university, the meeting was attended by Rector Miroslav Lávička as well as the Director of the NTC Research Centre Petr Kavalíř, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences Miloš Železný, Dean of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art Vojtěch Aubrecht, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Jan Michalík, Project Manager at the Sutnar Faculty Arnošt Marks and Head of the Department of Machining at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Miroslav Zetek.

The topic of the meeting was the UWB’s potential cooperation with Taiwan on the development of semiconductor chips and their applications, particularly with the company TSMC, one of the largest manufacturers of semiconductor chips, which is currently considering the construction of a factory in Dresden, Germany. Given its location, the UWB sees this intention as an opportunity to become involved in selected activities of the factory and join the planned consortium of cooperating companies and institutions.

At the meeting, Rector Miroslav Lávička described UWB’s cooperation with German companies and universities. Jan Michalík, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, presented the activities of the RICE research centre in chip technologies and Petr Kavalíř, director of the NTC research centre, talked about its research and development of new materials. Several projects of the NTIS and RTI research centres were also presented.

The UWB informed its guests, among other things, that it currently has a cooperation agreement with eleven Taiwanese universities and is interested in a further expansion of inter-university relations in education, research and development. “We value our partnerships with Taiwanese universities and are of course interested in developing them further. Just last week, we signed a new cooperation agreement with the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology,“ said Rector Miroslav Lávička.

“For Taiwanese companies operating in Europe, it is important to know the focus and the possibilities of the universities that they cooperate with, as well as the infrastructure of the given city and region,” explained Rector Miroslav Lávička about what one of the TECO representatives had said. "With this in mind, we will move forward and continue in our negotiations. Cooperation with Taiwan is for us a unique opportunity for further development,” he added.
