Faculty of Philosophy hosted the annual conference "Criminology Days" in June

Conference Cooperation Science

After seven years, the largest Czech criminology conference returned to Pilsen. The 12 conference panels featured over 50 presenters covering topics ranging from restorative justice, to juvenile delinquency, to life in prison. Guests included the president of the American Society of Criminology.

XI. Criminological Days, the largest meeting of Czech researchers of crime and criminalization, took place on 19-21 June in the building of the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Philosophy and in the Aula of the Faculty of Education. This year, the organisation was taken over by the Faculty of Arts, in cooperation with the Czech Society of Criminology, specifically by members of the Department of Anthropology. The conference was opened by Dean David Šanc (Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, University of ZČU), Jan Tomášek (Vice-Chairman of the Czech Society of Criminology) and Petr Kupka (Department of Anthropology).

Although it may sound surprising, criminological research has traditionally thrived at the Faculty of Arts, especially in the departments of anthropology and sociology. The opening plenary session was therefore devoted to criminological research associated with these faculty. The plenary session featured presentations by Laco Toušek and Alice Tyrychtrová on "Strategies for Denying Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment in Universities," Lubomír Lupták and Viktor Davídek on "Dormitories: The Face of Social Exclusion in Pilsen" and Petr Kupka, Martina Novopacká, Viktoria Paloušová and Václav Walach with their paper "Crime Control in Socially Excluded Localities in the Czech Republic".

The conference was traditionally attended by foreign guests. President of the American Society of Criminology Shadd Maruna (Queen's University Belfast) gave a lecture on the past and future of desistance research. Representatives of critical green criminology, Nigel South and Anna di Ronco (University of Essex), discussed the criminological dimension of the global climate crisis and responses to it. International guests also engaged in a moderated debate on engaged criminology.

Conference participants also witnessed several new developments. One of them was a public debate on the topic of Intimacy and Crime, featuring Barbora Doležalová (FVS UK), Martina Novopacká (IKSP), Zuzana Podaná (FF UK) and Laco Toušek (FF ZČU), moderated by journalist Fatima Rahimi from Deník Referendum and Czech Radio Wave. Another novelty was the round table Dialogue Behind Bars, led by Barbora Gřunděla and Jiří Mertl (FSS OSU), which was attended by academics and experts in the field of penitentiary care.

The Criminology Days in Pilsen were evaluated as a great success, which was confirmed by the financial support of the Faculty of Philosophy in the amount of 40 thousand CZK, which contributed to achieving the European level of the conference.
