Wall that connects. Six new ornaments adorn Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art UWB wall

New ornamental compositions adorn the courtyard wall of Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. The Wall Techniques Symposium continues testing graphic techniques on monumental scale in university campus public space.

The annual Wall Techniques Symposium organized by the Graphics Studio took place on September 10-11 at Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. This year's edition focused on ornament. Artists created six compositions emphasizing pure surface, line and low relief – fundamental elements of graphic expression – on monumental scale. The otherwise purely utilitarian concrete wall becomes a register of materials, techniques and expressive possibilities of graphic art in architecture, and a medium through which artistic creation steps out of studios and becomes part of public space.

Since 2017, this project has been transforming the faculty's exterior perimeter wall into an experimental space, gradually filling it with a series of artistic interventions. Students and teachers once again explored the possibilities of ancient colored plaster techniques right next to their studio.

"Next year, this activity will face an interesting confrontation with a group of mature pine trees. We are curious about ourselves and the result of the dialogue between concrete and vegetation, which you will be able to judge in September 2026. We believe this wall can not only separate but also connect," the authors noted.

This year's participants were Kateřina Šípková, Kristina Shchemeleva, Ema Elena Čechová, Said Ismail, Jan Kocman and Bedřich Kocman.
