Forensic chemistry, a spaceship, or the Baroque. Children’s University at FPE UWB offers all this

From October, children can uncover the secrets of forensic chemistry, learn German in a playful way, build their own spaceship, or discover the magic of herbs – and much more – at the Children’s University of the Faculty of Education, University of West Bohemia. Registration opened on September 11.

From October, children aged 9 to 14 will once again have the chance to explore the worlds of science, history, languages, technology, and art through the Children’s University of the Faculty of Education at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (FPE UWB). Registration opened on Thursday, September 11, at 6 p.m. “Every year, dozens of elementary school pupils take part. Thanks to the support of the Pilsen Region, the program is free of charge,” said Lenka Benediktová, Vice-Dean of FPE UWB.

The courses take place every Thursday from October 9 to December 11, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Each week, children can choose whether they want to try scientific experiments, dive into history, or create something of their own. This year, participants can also look forward to new educational activities held at the Pilsen Zoo.

Among this year’s new courses is Become a Forensic Chemist, where older children will use chemistry to track down a culprit. Younger participants can, for example, design their own spaceship, discover the magic of herbs from the garden, or join new courses focused on programming and artificial intelligence,” Benediktová explained. The offer is designed so that everyone can find something for themselves—from young explorers to technology enthusiasts.

One of the strongest aspects of the university is the wide variety of topics. In language courses, young learners will discover German in a playful way, explore the meaning of personal names, or decipher ancient languages. Historical workshops will immerse them in the history of Pilsen, allow them to meet eyewitnesses, or experience the Baroque era. The natural sciences will be represented by lessons on trilobites, mammals, birds, spiders, or plant dyes. Creative courses will include fine arts and music, such as reverse painting, sculpture, digital comics, or a music workshop.

Some of the most popular courses are those we prepare in cooperation with the company Konplan. Children get to try planning and design in 2D and 3D environments, learn the basics of technical drawing, or design their own beverage production line. These courses combine playfulness with real principles of technology and engineering,” Benediktová added.

The Children’s University gives children a chance to experience real university life. Those who complete more than six courses can look forward to a graduation ceremony and receiving their very first diploma,” the Vice-Dean concluded.

The capacity of the Children’s University is limited. More information and registration can be found at deti.zcu.cz.
