Faculty of Applied Sciences to establish a registration point for recruitment of bone marrow donors

FAV University Public

On Wednesday, 16 April, the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of West Bohemia will recruit new donors for the Czech National Marrow Donor Registry (CNRDD). The event will take place from 10 am to 4 pm and is open to students, employees of ZČU, and the general public.

"A wave of solidarity is spreading through the Czech Republic. A touching video of the father of the sick two-year-old Madlen triggered people's interest in registering for the CNRDD. A huge wave of support arose after posting his appeal on social networks. Thousands of people decided to join the registry to help and give hope not only to little Madlen but also to other patients who are waiting for their donor," said Lucie Houdová from the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, where a registration point for recruiting bone marrow donors will be set up on 16 April.

Those interested in registering must meet a few basic conditions: age between 18 and 35 years (until their 36th birthday), good health without permanent medication (exceptions are contraceptives and seasonal allergy medications), and a minimum weight of 50 kg. The registrant must be in perfect health. Any medical condition does not allow entry to the register.

How is the registration done?

The whole process is quick and painless:
- You fill in a short health questionnaire, which you will receive at a marked place in the FAV UWB building.
- You will swab your oral cavity using two brushes - you will also receive these on-site - and then place them in a marked envelope. Trained FAV students will be available to advise you on how to do this if necessary.
 - You will hand in your samples at the marked location.

You will then receive a thank you email informing you that you have been added to the donor database.
You can quickly get to the FAV by public transport - tram line 4 will take you directly to the faculty building at the stop Technická.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences of UWB has cooperated with the CNRDD since 2009. Lucie Houdová plays a vital role in this cooperation from the Department of Cybernetics of the FAV UWB, who, with her team, provides support to the registry regarding information technology and biomedical research. In cooperation with the donor registry and the University Hospital Pilsen, they have been working with data and developing modern information tools that help doctors find suitable donors and streamline the whole process of hematopoietic cell transplantation.
