Quantum physics, law, programming or singing. Anyone who is interested can now make their own schedule at UWB, with a maximum of 30 credits per semester - which corresponds to the normal load of a full-time student. Extraordinary study thus makes university teaching more accessible to the general public.
Dozens of courses are on offer, including general psychology, German, astronomy, chemical technology and modern methods of teaching geography. Courses are arranged in three categories - leisure courses, upskilling courses aimed at professional growth and courses for high school students. "We want to open up the university to those who don't need or want a degree but want to broaden their horizons or advance their careers. Also for those who want to get a taste of what university studies entail before they actually embark on them," says Jiří Kohout, vice-rector for educational concepts and student affairs.
Each course has its own rules for successful completion and is governed by the academic year schedule. Classes thus take place in regular groups among regular students and include lectures, seminars and traditional assessments. Successful participants receive an official certificate of completion.
Extraordinary study is paid, usually several thousand crowns per semester depending on the scope and difficulty of the subject. It offers exactly what people are looking for today - targeted education without the heavy administrative burden. "Interest in shorter, more flexible forms of study has been on the rise for a long time. Extraordinary study can be a way to advance professionally, learn specific skills or get acquainted with new developments in the field," adds Jan Topinka, Head of the Department of Lifelong and Distance Learning at UWB.
The offer of courses will change every six months. Those interested can apply for each semester separately. The University is accepting applications for the first winter semester of extraordinary studies until 31 August 2025. More information can be found on the website.
