The subject of the training of the forces of Integrated Rescue System was the presence of an active shooter at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, who was in the premises of the canteen and caused fatal gunshot wounds to several persons and injured others.
"Considering the context of events that have taken place in the past in different parts of the world and which unfortunately continue to take place, we have been conducting these exercises for a long time and therefore they are not new to the police. However, in view of several events that have happened in the Czech Republic in previous years, especially with regard to the tragic event that occurred last December at the Faculty of Arts in Prague, these exercises are becoming increasingly important, which is why we are paying more attention to them," explained Pavla Burešová, spokesperson for the Pilsen Regional Police.
Police officers practiced their procedures and individual activities that they have to ensure and perform in the event of such an emergency. According to the police management, this exercise fulfilled all this.
The training was also an important test for the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. "We wanted to test in practice the technologies that we are considering purchasing to ensure greater safety for all those who move daily in and around the buildings of UWB. For example, we are now discussing sound detectors, a more modern camera system or a mass warning system," explained Miroslav Lávička, the rector of UWB. The University of West Bohemia plans to invest tens of millions of crowns in the coming years.
The police officers were joined by 106 students or employees of the UWB who had previously completed theoretical training courses directed by police during winter and spring.
"First of all, I would like to thank the management of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen for the opportunity to carry out the exercise in their premises, as well as I would like to express my thanks to the students and all the employees of this faculty who were not provided with standard conditions on the day of our exercise and were affected by the exercise we carried out," said Petr Macháček, Director of the Regional Police Directorate of the Pilsen Region.
The leadership of UWB also tested the activation of the crisis staff.
