Miroslav Lávička is the sole candidate for UWB rector

Miroslav Lávička is seeking another four-year term as Rector of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. He was the only person nominated by the 21 September deadline. The Academic Senate will set the election date. The new term begins in March 2027.

Eight nominations for a candidate for Rector were submitted by members of the Academic Senate of UWB. All eight nominated the current Rector and mathematician Miroslav Lávička. The validity of the nominations was decided by a vote of the Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary of the Academic Senate. The result has been published on the university’s official notice board. At the beginning of October, the Senate leadership will set the date for the first round of the election of the candidate for Rector.

“Over the past four years, we have launched a number of initiatives at UWB that still need to be completed. At the same time, we are entering a period of further significant change, including changes that may result from the new Higher Education Act currently being prepared. I am seeking another term also because I want to help prepare the university well for these changes,” said Miroslav Lávička, who has served as Rector since 1 March 2023.

The Rector is elected by the 59-member Academic Senate of UWB, which comprises 39 employees and 20 students. A candidate must receive at least 30 votes, regardless of the number of senators present.

“For the academic community, an important part of the process will also be the presentation of the candidate’s programme, which we plan to hold by the end of October. The election of the candidate for Rector itself will most likely take place in November,” said Pavel Karban, Chair of the Academic Senate of UWB. The new four-year term of office of the Rector will begin on 1 March 2027.
