Unique Cross-Border Mentoring Program "careerSTEPS" Strengthens Internationalization at UWB

International Cooperation Study

The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen in collaboration with its German partner, OTH Amberg-Weiden, has launched a pioneering cross-border mentoring program as part of the career4PROF project.

This program is specifically designed for master's students or those interested in pursuing a doctoral degree and a research career. The aim of the mentoring program is to inspire and motivate young individuals for a research-oriented professional path, as interest in doctoral studies and academic careers has been declining persistently across both technical and non-technical fields.

The careerSTEPS mentoring program is based on the idea of creating cross-border mentor-mentee tandems. In the current academic year 2023/24, in the pilot phase, 10 mentee applications were collected from Bavaria. Thanks to the willingness and enthusiasm of mentors from various university departments, 10 mentors corresponding to the mentee profiles were secured at the University of West Bohemia. Each pair signs a mentoring agreement tailored to the mentee's wishes and needs, and the mentoring program runs from November 2023 to July 2024.

Despite being in its early stages, a student from OTH Amberg-Weiden, Julia Bauer, has already visited the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. She met with her mentor, Prof. Ing. Karel Noháč, Ph.D., head of the Department of Electric Power Engineering, during her two-day intensive visit, where the mentor and his team, along with representatives of the faculty's leadership, dedicated significant attention to the student. Most of the mentees considering doctoral studies at the University of West Bohemia (UWB) come with interesting topics they are working on at OTH Amberg-Weiden.

On the other hand, mentees from the Faculty of Economics participated in the international scientific conference XB-CON 2023 at the Faculty of Economics on November 9-10, 2023, in Železná Ruda. In the afternoon hours, they engaged in a workshop on writing research papers led by Prof. Dr. Tobias Chilla from FAU Nürnberg and Prof. Ing. Jan Čadil, Ph.D. from UWB.

Special thanks for their willingness to participate in the careerSTEPS mentoring program and kick-start it, beyond their job responsibilities and without remuneration, go to the mentors: Assoc. Prof. PaedDr. Dana Egerová, Ph.D. (Faculty of Economics), Assoc. Prof.  Dita Hommerová, Ph.D., MBA (Faculty of Economics), Olesye Petrenko (Faculty of Economics), Assoc. Prof. PaedDr. Jaroslav Dokoupil, Ph.D. (Faculty of Economics), Assoc. Prof. PaedDr. Ludvík Eger, CSc. (Faculty of Economics), Assoc. Prof. Ing. Luděk Hynčík, Ph.D. (New Technologies Center), Assoc. Prof. Ing. Karel Noháč, Ph.D. (Faculty of Electrical Engineering), David Pánek (Faculty of Electrical Engineering), Prof. Ing. Emil Vacík, Ph.D. (Faculty of Economics).
