Postphenomenology, Mind and Media

Talk Conference Science and research

On Thursday, November 19, 2020, the first annual student conference Postphenomenology, Mind and Media of the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of West Bohemia will take place.

The online conference is intended not only for male and female students of the MA and PhD programmes, but also for all academic staff who are happy to share research, critical reflection and valuable experiences with younger colleagues.

"At the beginning of the 21st century, it is clear that media and technology have a profound impact on our lives and mediate our relationships with other people and the world itself. But the influence of technology is nothing new. Already the first prehistoric tools have begun to shape our perception of the world, our thinking, our culture, and, in terms of theories of the interaction of genes and material culture, even our biology. It is all the more surprising that philosophical exploration of technology only began in the first half of the 20th century. Influential thinkers of technology such as Martin Heidegger, Hans Jonas, Karl Jaspers, Lewis Mumford and others have been influential to this day. Yet the world of modern technology is evolving at an accelerating pace. And our thinking about technology also needs to be updated ," says Jakub Ferenc, the main organizer of the first edition of the conference. "One of the current currents of philosophical analysis of technology and material culture in general is postphenomenology, founded by the American philosopher Don Ihde. It is not the only contemporary movement, but its emphasis on exploring the experience of the everyday world, in dialogue with media theory, archaeology and cognitive science, makes it one of the most interesting and prolific. The first student post-phenomenological conference aims to introduce this new and still unexplored post-phenomenological analysis of technology in the Czech Republic."  He adds.

Martin Ritter, philosopher and expert on the phenomenology of technology, Michal Polák, philosopher of mind, and Martin Charvát, media theorist and expert on contemporary philosophy, will be the keynote speakers.
