A historic sporting evening in Pilsen. UWB dominated the university football league finals

Sport University Achievements

The Na Prokopávce sport complex in Pilsen witnessed one of the most significant sporting moments of the university year. The final evening of the university football league offered not only a sporting battle, but also a half-time show. The cup was won by the UWB players.

The first ever university football league title was won by the footballers of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, who defeated the team from the University of South Bohemia 3:1 in the final round. Not only students and graduates gathered at Prokopávka, but also the general public and those who support sporting events in Pilsen. The final evening was attended by about 500 spectators, including the rectors of the University of West Bohemia and the University of South Bohemia.

"The boys had quality, both in terms of football and as people. And that's always very important. For many of the boys, it was their last season, and I could see how badly they wanted to succeed. Everything always has to come together and every piece of the puzzle has to fit, and we managed to do that," said team coach Jaroslav Kovařík from the Institute of Physical Education and Sport at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. According to him, it was a tough battle, but the team was well prepared and performed consistently throughout the season.

At halftime, spectators enjoyed a light show performed by the Pyroterra group. The organizers wanted to show that academic sports leagues are also worth watching and that they can compete with the professional background of Czech competitions.

The live broadcast of the doubleheader on ČT+ was watched by 2,229 viewers. At 4 p.m. on the last Wednesday in November, the teams from ČVUT and VŠB-TU Ostrava also played for the bronze medal. The match ended 1-1 after regular time, so it had to be decided by penalty kicks. ČVUT Prague was luckier in the shootout and took third place.

According to the UWB team coach, it will now be important not to rest on their laurels. "We want to integrate new players into the team, who may have already been part of the team but didn't get much playing time. And we definitely want to maintain our quality so that we can once again play an important role in the league," he said.
