Faculty of Applied Sciences UWB to open labs and join Czech Academy of Sciences Week this Saturday

Press Release Science Public

Nanomaterials thinner than a human hair, advanced robots, and a night sky tour – just a few highlights offered by the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen on Saturday, November 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as part of Czech Academy of Sciences Week.

An exceptional attraction will be the presentation of a completely new robotic manipulator designed for testing pipe weld defects. “The manipulator easily attaches to the pipe using a flexible toothed belt. It enables testing even of more complex pipe welds, such as those found in power plants,” explained researcher Martin Švejda. In the robotic greenhouse, a robotic vineyard pruner will also be on display.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of West Bohemia (UWB) is the only institution in western Bohemia, apart from the local branch of the Czech Academy of Sciences, participating in Czech Academy of Sciences Week. “Our faculty is dedicated to top-tier research in technical and natural sciences. I am delighted that we can showcase some of our achievements to the public as part of Czech Academy of Sciences Week,” said the Dean of the Faculty, Miloš Železný. In addition to lab tours and meetings with scientists, visitors can look forward to seeing the robotic dog SPOT by the IT Company of the City of Pilsen, which will move freely around the building.

A unique opportunity will also be a visit to the faculty’s rooftop, where, weather permitting, a lecture on architecture and urbanism will take place. The lecture by architects Jakub Mareš and Radek Zeman from the "Atelier k světu" aims to introduce key aspects of urban and public space design that significantly influence the quality of life for city residents. Another faculty partner, Rokycany Observatory, will offer a brief tour of the night sky, showing which constellations and planets are visible in the autumn skies.

The Czech Academy of Sciences Week Festival is a scientific event offering lectures, exhibitions, laboratory tours, documentary films, expert discussions, and talks across the country and in various scientific fields. This year’s fourth annual event will take place from November 4 to 10, 2024. Entry to all events is free, though some require reservations on the website.
