The University Library prepared an unusual experience for the children of the University of West Bohemia employees. On the night of 13-14 June, they spent the night in the library, visited the world of animals, made luminous swallows and read poems and fairytales.

A night in the world of fairytales, animals and technology was spent in the University Library of the West Bohemian University in mid-June by 27 children, who were taken care of by 7 librarians. The children of the university staff got acquainted with the library space and educated themselves in a fun way. One of the highlights of the evening was the visit of Karel Makoň from Animal Rescue Station Pilsen, who prepared an animal identification lesson and also a live owl demonstration.

Among other things, the children learned how to act in crisis situations. Through practical demonstrations, the librarians explained what to do when a friend gets hurt or when they find an abandoned animal.

The evening spent in the university environment was also in the spirit of scientific fun. The Department of Materials and Technology of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering UWB prepared a creative workshop. Tomáš Řeřicha, Jiří Navrátil and Julie Hladíková showed the children how to make luminous swallows.

"This year's patron of the Night with Andersen was the Czech writer and poet Jiří Žáček, who is celebrating a beautiful round jubilee this year. Many of us grew up with his books. To commemorate him, we enriched the programme with various poems and ended the evening with a common reading before bedtime," said Miloslava Faitová, director of the University Library.

Night with Andersen is also organised annually by many other libraries in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The event, which has a tradition of more than twenty years, aims to show children that reading is a great adventure. It takes place on the anniversary of the birth of the Danish fairy-tale writer, Hans Christian Andersen.
