The Sutnar Faculty invites art students, illustrators, animators, educators, and other interested members of the public to the Jiří Trnka International Symposium. From Tuesday 20 to Thursday 22 October. The symposium will offer specialist lectures, discussions, and workshops exploring this year’s theme, The Power of Life – Dynamics, Vitality, Empathy. The program will showcase the work of prominent figures in contemporary illustration and animation. It will focus on nature, our relationship with the world around us, and how visual art responds to social and environmental issues.
This year’s Jiří Trnka Award recipients are Italian illustrator and author Beatrice Alemagna, Mexican illustrator Juan Palomino, and the Internationale Jugendbibliothek (International Youth Library) in Munich. Alongside presentations by the laureates and other artists, the symposium will also offer film screenings. Guests include Japanese illustrator Saki Matsumoto, illustrator David Böhm, Agrafka studio, and Luca Tóth. Workshops will allow participants to meet the guest artists informally. The literary program will offer ideas for working with young readers, including through the Mosty ke knihám (Bridges to Books) project.
Several exhibitions accompany the symposium. The Ladislav Sutnar Gallery in central Pilsen will present work by the Jiří Trnka Award laureates and other guests under the title Síla života / The Power of Life. The exhibition will run from 14 October to 3 November. Its opening reception will take place later, on 21 October at 6 pm, as part of the symposium program.
The same theme is explored in two exhibitions of work by Sutnar Faculty students. The Education and Research Library of the Pilsen Region is already showing selected bachelor’s and master’s degree projects exploring nature and sustainability, created in the Didactic Illustration, Comics and Illustration for Children, and Book Design and Paper Shaping studios. The exhibition runs until 30 October. The Incubator Gallery, located in the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art building, will present another selection of student work from 15 to 29 October. The opening reception will take place on 14 October at 4 pm.
The accompanying program of the Jiří Trnka International Symposium also extends to Prague. Altán Klamovka will host a solo exhibition of work by Juan Palomino, with an opening reception on 16 October at 5 pm. The exhibition will run until 12 November. The full symposium program and information about the exhibitions are available on the faculty website.
