Press Release Science and research Public
After two years in which the University of West Bohemia brought its scientific know-how and enthusiasm for science to Klatovy, Tachov, and this June also to Rokycany, the day with the university and its research returns to Pilsen. "In twenty years, Science and Technology Day has become one of the largest popularization events in the region. We show that science is not confined to laboratories, but is part of everyday life. It is an event for children, parents, and grandparents—for anyone who wants to discover the world around them," said Jan Váně, Vice-Rector for External Relations and Communication at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.
This year, visitors will try controlling a locomotive using brain waves and meet a robotic dog or a vehicle that could one day explore other planets. Students from the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art will bring furniture they have designed and manufactured themselves, the Faculty of Health Studies will allow everyone to experience the role of a patient and a healthcare professional firsthand, and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will launch 3D printing right on the square. People will be transported back in time thanks to historians and archaeologists, while lawyers will draw them into a real courtroom.
The exhibits will also include a student formula car from the UWB eRacing Team Pilsen workshop. "Hundreds of hours of work by two dozen people went into our purely electric single-seater – from construction and logistics to communication with partners. Last year, we won bronze with it at a race in Portugal. At Science and Technology Day, we have the opportunity to show the public what we can do and inspire younger generations," explained team leader and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering student Ondřej Lukeš. The student formula car is an example of how students at the University of West Bohemia gain access to real scientific projects and practical experience during their studies.
The program at Republic Square in Pilsen will also include interviews and demonstrations on stage. Science and Technology Day is intended for schools, children, and their parents or grandparents—anyone who wants to see for themselves that science is all around us. Scientists and students will be ready to answer questions from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and admission is free. The all-day science program will conclude with a concert by the Pilsen Student Symphony Orchestra.
