Further Education Guests Lecture
Approximately 250 visitors to the event from the ranks of students, employees and the public had the opportunity to gain a new perspective on law, legal practice, as well as areas that are only marginally related to law on March 5 at the Faculty of Law of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (FPR UWB). The program included four lectures and one film screening.
The lecture entitled Work Injuries at Teambuilding was led by Tomáš Jícha from the law firm David and Macek. Among other things, the participants learned that it depends on the meaning and purpose of the activity during which the employee suffers the injury. If they suffer an injury, for example, during team-building activities organised by the employer, such as a ski race or an employee volleyball tournament, it is likely to be an accident at work. On the other hand, if an employee is injured at a company party, which the employer organized only as a reward for his subordinates, it is unlikely to be an accident at work, because the employee is not performing an activity for the benefit of his employer at that moment. Participant Barbora K. commented on the lecture: "I got a comprehensive overview of how the issue is dealt with within the Labour Code. I consider this knowledge relevant for my studies of public administration, as it will be useful in practice."
Subsequently, Petr Papež from the law firm Nest Legal, who also works as a teacher at the faculty, took the floor. He focused his lecture on the strategy of business development in a legal light and gave the audience some advice on how to proceed with the establishment and operation of an s.r.o. "Petr Papež was able to pass on the foundations for the establishment of his own business company in an interesting way," said Hugo S.
The expert lecture entitled Working with Victims of Crime was given by Vladimíra Čapková, head of the Pilsen counseling center of the White Circle of Safety. The audience learned how to communicate properly with victims of crime, how to proceed in conversations with them, how to help these people, but at the same time what to avoid. Tereza S. shared her newly acquired knowledge: "After committing a crime, the victim often blames himself. Here it is important to explain to her that she did not commit the crime. It is this message that we should show her. Knowing that the perpetrator is guilty, not her, can help the victim find new self-confidence." Another visitor to the event, Gabriel T., added: "It is also essential for the victim to get out of themselves experiencing negative emotions. The victim must cry, scream, it is a basic condition for processing the impact of the crime, so the presence of a close person, family member or trusted person is very important, this person can go through the so-called ventilation process with the victim of crime."
Chronologically, the last lecture was led by Anna Korandová from the Institute of Restorative Justice and there was also a screening of a short video documentary called After the Death of Friendship. The content of the documentary was the tragic death of his father. However, the perpetrator did not hide and admitted his guilt with humility and condolences. The family therefore decided not to reject him and were ready to forgive him. Korandová was accompanied by guests – some of the main actors in the film. This gave the participants the opportunity to meet them in person and talk to them about their situation.
The whole evening ended with a screening of the film Judges Under Pressure by director Kacper Lisowski. It was a documentary film focused primarily on Polish judge Igor Tuleya, who points out the issue of the gradual weakening of the independence of the judiciary, and thus the erosion of the democracy of the state.
The Night of Law was organized by the student association ELSA Pilsen in cooperation with the Nugis Finem association. The event takes place every year in several cities in the Czech Republic – for example, in Brno, Olomouc, Ostrava, Frýdek-Místek or Nový Jičín.
