The most beautiful Czech books of the year come from Sutnar Faculty

Alumni Competition Achievements

The Most Beautiful Czech Books of the Year awards, organized by the Museum of Czech Literature and the Ministry of Culture, were announced in mid-June. Students and graduates of the Sutnar Faculty achieved significant success. 305 projects were submitted to the 59th edition of the competition.

In this year's volume of the Most Beautiful Czech Books of the Year 2023 competition, students and graduates of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art achieved significant succes. Ovid's book "Proměny" (Metamorphoses), illustrated by Filip Šenkeřík and graphically designed by Vojtěch Liebl, won the prestigious  Vojtěch Preissig Prize given by the Czech Bibliophiles' Society. Graduate Kateřina Puncmannová received the Museum of Czech Literature and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague Award to a graphic artist aged under 30 for the book "K 20," describing her experiences from a mental health hospitals and the importance of solving personal problems.

The Arno Sáňka Award (presented by the Museum of Czech Literature to student works) was won by Barbora Kramná from the Graphic Design studio, whose book "Femme" was created in collaboration with artificial intelligence and thematizes the women's issue.

Dominik Tyl, a graduate of the Didactic Illustration studio, was also nominated for the Arno Sáňka Award for his author’s book "The Longest Journey" in which he utilized not only artistic skills but also his extraordinary knowledge of history and his literary abilities. In the Children's Book category, the book "Neither Girl Nor Boy" by Marto Kelbl caught the jury's attention and was also nominated. The success of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art was further underlined by additional nominations – the book "Děcko" (Kid) by Professor Mikoláš Axmann (in the Bibliophile Books and Artist's Books category) and the book " Srdcovka" (Heartbreaker) by Štěpánka Jislová, a graduate of Sutnar's school (in the Fiction category).

The awards were presented by the Minister of Culture Martin Baxa together with directors and chairpersons of significant cultural institutions. These awards not only highlight the quality of work by students and graduates of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, but also confirm its important position in the field of book design and illustration in the Czech Republic.
