While twenty-year-old Teodor attends classes full-time, his father, Vladimír, is mostly at school on weekends, balancing his studies with a full-time job. Even though one is in his first year and the other in his third, at home they mainly see each other as teammates. “Of course we help each other. At the very least by talking things through and discussing what’s currently going on,” says Vladimír Pech. His son Teodor adds with a smile: “I definitely call my dad at ten in the evening when I’m studying and trying to figure out the answer to a question I really can’t solve on my own.”

Both were drawn to mechanical engineering through technology, though each in a slightly different way. Teodor grew up surrounded by models and engines they repaired together at home. Vladimír returned to university after twenty-five years, having left school unfinished and gone straight into practice. This time, however, he is not driven by career ambition. “I just thought I’d give it another try. I also wanted to show my children that they should try as well,” he explains. In the end, it was his father’s return to university that influenced Teodor too. “When I saw he had applied, I thought I couldn’t fall behind,” he admits.

They share grades, consult technical assignments, and now even discuss artificial intelligence, with the son helping his father keep up. “Nowadays, people need to keep learning constantly. Everything is speeding up enormously and huge changes are coming, especially with AI,” says Vladimír Pech. Teodor adds his own advice to anyone considering applying to university: “Definitely apply. And then don’t just be a student — be an active student.”
