Faculty of Arts invites you to a discussion with Erik Tabery

Talk Press Release Public

"There is a debate about whether we need the humanities at all, and I am a supporter of the fact that we need them more than ever," says Erik Tabery, editor-in-chief of the weekly Respekt, and also a guest at a discussion organised by the Department of Philosophy on Tuesday 27th November.

The title of the talk, Abandoned University, Abandoned Society, is a reference to Tabery's book, which won the 2018 Magnesia Litera Book of the Year award. When I did my research for other texts and then for the book, it showed up even more," says Erik Tabery. Students and members of the general public are welcome to come and discuss with him the importance of education in today's society. Admission is free.

The discussion is part of a series prepared for this academic year by the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy of ZČU under the title "University as an Opportunity". At the beginning of October, a panel discussion "Humanities and Social Sciences Education and their Role in a Democratic Society" with Jan Sokol, Václav Moravec, Mark Hilšer and other guests was held. The discussions will continue at regular intervals. Their focus will be related to the topic of education, science and the general functioning of modern societies in the 21st century.

"We will ask questions about the meaning and level of contemporary education, the state of applied research at universities, the possible renewal of institutions through participatory technologies, the relationship between education and play, the (non-)existence of Czech collective identity or the importance of critical thinking," invites one of the organizers, Naďa Hlaváčková. "Our effort will be to point out that the platform of the university environment offers an extraordinary space where it is possible to learn and experiment. The aim will also be to raise the prestige of higher education in the eyes of students, teachers and the public," she adds.

In February, there will be a discussion with biochemist Martin Fusko on the topic of Applied Research and its place in the university.
