Four professorships, fifteen associate professorships, seven commemorative medals and one honorary doctorate. This is how this year's ceremonial meeting of the Scientific Council of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen will look like, which UWB is organizing on Wednesday, 13 November at 1 pm in the Great Hall of the Town Hall. For what and to whom are the individual titles and awards given?
The UWB commemorative medals are awarded for outstanding scientific work and discoveries, artistic creation, significant teaching activities, long-term significant activities for the UWB, its development, cooperation with the external environment, including abroad, promotion and popularization of the University or for significant social actions. This year the medal will be awarded to an Africanist, an ethnologist, a chemist or a mechanical engineer.
The second award for significant scientific merit is the award of an honorary doctorate (doctor honoris causa). The first such proposals for honorary doctorates appeared at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen as early as 1993. Since then, the university administration has appointed three dozen persons. This year it will be awarded to Prof. Dr. Didier Sébilleau for his significant contribution to the development of international research cooperation and the development of the New Technologies Research Institute - a research centre of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.
In addition to the awarding of medals and honorary doctorates, the meeting of the Ceremonial Scientific Council of UWB is also an opportunity to introduce new associate professors and professors. Readers will find their list in the brochure. A person who meets the conditions of the habilitation procedure can become an associate professor or assistant professor. The register of appointed associate professors at UWB has existed since 1990 and in its history we can find about 200 names. At present, habilitation proceedings can be initiated at five faculties of UWB - FAV, FEK, FEL, FF and FST, in a total of 11 fields.
The new professors were already appointed by the President of the Republic last year and this year, so their introduction to the public will be just a kind of icing on the cake and a look back at the process of awarding professorships.
The following newly appointed professors working at UWB will be introduced:
Prof. PhDr. Ladislav Cabada, Ph.D. - Czech and Czechoslovak History
prof. Ing. Jiří Houška, Ph.D. - Applied Physics
prof. Ing. Václav Šmídl, Ph.D. - field of study Electrical Engineering
prof. Ing. Miroslav Zetek, Ph.D. - branch Mechanical Engineering
The Register of Appointed Professors at UWB has existed since 2006 and there are more than 50 appointed persons. At present, it is possible to become a professor, or to start the procedure leading to obtaining this highest teaching rank, at four faculties of UWB - FAV, FEK, FEL and FST in a total of nine fields.
