The return of nationalist slogans to public discourse in the 21st century initially raised no serious alarm until extremist political entities seized upon them. Today, it is clear that democratic countries face the rise of neo-nationalism, a phenomenon that was until recently considered historically obsolete. The 254th Interdisciplinary Seminar at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen will focus on this topic. Students and the general public can join on Tuesday, October 27, at 4:30 PM at the Museum of West Bohemia in Pilsen. This time, the lecture will be delivered by actress, diplomat, and former politician Magda Vášáryová. She will address the problems and conflicts of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which remain alive today and significantly influence contemporary debates on the identity and direction of the Visegrád Group countries.
Mgr. Magda Vášáryová, Ph.D., dr.h.c., first rose to fame as one of the most prominent faces of Czechoslovak cinema. After the Velvet Revolution, she transitioned into international politics and diplomacy, serving as ambassador to Austria and Poland. She is fluent in Czech, German, English, Russian, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, and French. She is also an author; her latest book, Než zmizím, was published in October 2025. In 2024, the Faculty of Social Studies at Masaryk University awarded her an honorary doctorate in recognition of her contributions to international relations and diplomacy. In 2026, she completed her Ph.D. in historical sociology at the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University. In July of the same year, she received the President's Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
