The branches of the library of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen are again open for students, teachers and the public from Monday to Thursday from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. and on Fridays from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. An exception is the Economic Library in Cheb - its opening hours and library contacts can be found on the library's website.
The library at Klatovská Street now provides all services not only for the Faculty of Education but also for the Faculty of Health Care Studies and has changed its name to the Education and Health Care Library. With the reconstruction of the building of the Faculty of Education on Chodské náměstí, the study room there also closed, and the collection of textbooks for primary and secondary schools is now available for open access section at Klatovská.
During the summer, the Education Library was completely reconstructed, which was financed from the IROP project Revitalisation of sub-libraries of the University Library of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. The students will use the new furniture-equipped study room with soundproofed seating niches and armchairs. Mobile acoustic screen panels are available to ensure greater privacy while studying. The open access section is equipped with practical bookshelves as well as study seats by the windows.
During the winter semester, the library is installing new "kiosks" for searching the library catalog as well as stations for charging cell phones, tablets or laptops. In October, the library plans to hold an Open Day for all students, staff and the general public in the newly renovated space.
During the renovation, the librarians moved a total of 887 boxes of publications, i.e. countless tons of books.
The Philosophical and Law Library in the sady Pětatřicátníků also underwent partial reconstruction. It has new windows and entrance doors, which will help to increase the comfort of readers. Most importantly, thanks to the support of the IROP project, new magazine racks with storage boxes and new seating furniture were also purchased.
The library also has a relaxing chillout area with seating bags and acoustic screen panels, which will make your studying more peaceful. You will also feel more comfortable in the library thanks to the kitchen, which was put into use in the library a summer ago and is available to you.
The Bory Library at the University's Bory campus will also undergo changes in the new semester. Relaxing chillout areas with seating bags will be expanded. During October, the kitchen on the ground floor will be opened, where you can use a fridge, microwave and kettle.
The university shop has also been transformed. You can buy books from the UWB publishing house and university merchandise. Instead of the old sales counter, you will find an airy and light-filled space and a wide range of goods.
On Wednesday 16 October at 17:00 you will have the opportunity to listen to Jiří Kalát's talk about his travels in Greenland. In the summer of 2023, he and his friends completed the 170-kilometre Arctic Circle Trail through the Greenland wilderness. In March 2024, he returned to Greenland to enjoy the wilderness at a time when snow and ice are everywhere.
Film screenings in collaboration with the American Center in Plzeň will continue in the fall. The films will be screened in English with Czech subtitles, and each screening will be introduced in English by Bradley Vice, a lecturer at the Faculty of Education specializing in American literature. The screenings will take place in the hall of the Library Bory (Univerzitní 18) starting at 5:00 p.m. Screenings begin with Carrie on Wednesday, September 25, followed by The Dead Zone, Stand by Me, and IT. Other screening dates to be announced.
Keep an eye on the library's website and Facebook for more information.
