The Faculty of Applied Sciences has a new Mathematics program focused on secondary school education

FAV Students Applicant

In mid-May, the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (FAV) received accreditation for its new bachelor's degree program in Mathematics focused on secondary school education. The admission process for the 2025/2026 academic year is already underway.

The shortage of secondary school mathematics teachers impeded the launch of the new study program. The bachelor's degree program in Mathematics focusing on secondary school education is thus a response to the demand from regional schools. The Faculty of Applied Sciences has long offered a follow-up master's program in Secondary School Mathematics Teaching and is now expanding its activities to the bachelor's level.

“The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen places significant emphasis on training teachers in the Pilsen and Karlovy Vary regions. The new bachelor's program in Mathematics with a focus on secondary school education has been accredited for a full ten years, which confirms its quality and long-term prospects,” said Gabriela Holubová, head of the Department of Mathematics at FAV. From the next academic year, FAV will provide a complete education for future mathematics teachers – from bachelor's to master's degrees (including a rigorous procedure leading to the title of RNDr.). "We believe that the high-quality professional background, focus on modern mathematics teaching, and reputation of the Faculty of Applied Sciences will attract new applicants to study this year," she added.

The program is part of a so-called combined study program, where applicants choose two study programs – a major and a minor. In cooperation with the Faculty of Education at the University of West Bohemia, combining mathematics with physics, computer science, biology, chemistry, or geography in the next academic year will be possible. Applications for study can be submitted until August 8, 2025. Admission requirements and information about the program are available on the FAV website or the KMA website. The program has a capacity of 30 students.

Through this inter-faculty cooperation, the University of West Bohemia is adopting a model standard at many universities in the Czech Republic, where selected study programs leading to the teaching profession are taught simultaneously by the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Science and Technology.

The new program at FAV differs from a similar program at the Faculty of Education at UWB primarily in its emphasis on preparing mathematics teachers for secondary schools and its natural connection with other technical and scientific fields, which corresponds to the principles of modern STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
