In Japanese, hikobae means a new shoot sprouting from a dead trunk. The title of the comic book collection thus refers to the themes of tradition and new beginnings that the individual stories explore. At the same time, it takes readers on a journey through lesser-known corners of the Japanese archipelago.
All the comic stories were drawn by students of the Media Illustration studio at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, based on scripts by poet and curator Jean-Gaspard Páleníček. They were led by teacher and comic book creator Václav Šlajch. Šlajch and Páleníček will present the Hikobae collection in Pilsen. The discussion will be hosted by the Education and Research Library of the Pilsen Region on December 2 at 5:30 p.m.
