What do teachers, headmasters, and inspectors remember from the early days of the new education system? And what was everyday life like in classrooms during the time when the Iron Curtain fell?

On the Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy, the Faculty of Education of the University of West Bohemia, in cooperation with the Department of Lifelong and Distance Learning and the City of Pilsen, invites you to an author reading from Jiří Zounek and Ota Polouček’s book The Time When Everything Was Possible.

The event will take place on Monday, November 17 at 5:00 p.m. in the FPE auditorium (VC–119) and is part of the third annual Reflections on Freedom program organized by the City of Pilsen to commemorate the holiday of freedom and the International Students’ Day.

The book offers a glimpse into the 1990s in schools through the eyes of witnesses – a period full of enthusiasm, improvisation, and chaos. Passion often replaced textbooks in foreign language teaching, parents began to play a greater role in school life, and the “old order” collided with new opportunities.

Readings from the book will open a discussion on how those transformations shaped today’s education and the perception of the teaching profession. The audience will be invited to return to a time when Czech education was taking a fresh breath – full of hope, uncertainty, and the need to find a new direction.

Due to limited capacity, seat reservation is required via this registration form.

The event is part of the Reflections on Freedom program, which on November 17 in Pilsen will also feature musical performances, slam poetry, and experiential activities.
