Jiří Kalát describes his journey along the Arctic Circle Trail as a huge life experience and adventure: 'In the summer of 2023, my friends and I completed the 170-kilometre Arctic Circle Trail through the Greenland wilderness. It was epic, but the constant rain and mosquitoes made us wonder what it would be like without them. So we had no choice but to head out when there was snow and ice everywhere. So in March 2024, my feet were once again on Greenland soil, wearing cross-country ski boots and warm socks. It was -25°C outside, 160 kilometres of wilderness ahead, the Polish post office had lost half our food and our spirits were heading towards freezing. Luckily we met a Czech hunter living here, who gave us three kilos of muskrat meat and a huge cod for ten beers (typical Czech currency). A goulash was cooked, it was easier to hit the trail with a full stomach, we packed our stuff and our journey began. For the remaining nine days, our cross-country skis sliced through the snow of Greenland and each of us enjoyed the silence of the island in our own way, for each of us the reality of the trail was a huge adventure and a lifetime experience."

Come and listen to Jiří Kalát's story at the UWB University Library.
