Three days full of discussions, films, and interpretations – this is what the cultural-scientific workshop promises, bringing students and lecturers from the University of Salzburg to Pilsen. Together with their Czech colleagues, they will immerse themselves in the story of the Golem, a mysterious figure that has become part not only of Jewish tradition but also of world literature and cinema.

The official opening on October 8 will also be attended by the Austrian Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Bettina Kirnbauer. Immediately afterward, participants can look forward to a screening of Paul Wegener’s silent film How the Golem Came into the World, a reminder of how this theme entered the world of cinema.

The main part of the program will take place on Thursday, October 9. Students from Pilsen and Salzburg will join forces in a joint interpretation of Gustav Meyrink’s novel The Golem. The afternoon session will also be open to the general public – Professor Eidher from the University of Salzburg will give a lecture The Golem in Jewish Tradition. Thanks to simultaneous interpreting, the audience will also be able to hear it in Czech.

“The workshop will connect students from different cultural backgrounds and offer them the opportunity to jointly interpret a theme that is deeply rooted in the European tradition,” explained Dana Pfeifrová from the Department of German Language at the Faculty of Education of the University of West Bohemia.

The workshop is part of the Czech-German project Action and shows that a theme hundreds of years old can still speak to new generations.
