"Away with the statue!" - is it just an ironic call to reflection, or a genuine public sentiment? What drives the placement of sculptures in public spaces, and how do such interventions shape society's relationship with art? These are among the questions art theorist and educator Radek Horáček from the Department of Art and Creation at Masaryk University's Faculty of Education will explore in his Pilsen lecture on Monday, May 4, at 10:15.

The lecture is hosted by the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia, as part of its History of Sculpture series. Horáček will present six stories from Brno, drawing on his experience as author and editor of the Sculpture in Brno 1989 - 2019 publication. He will also address broader questions at the heart of public art: Is Brno unique in having a university sculpture collection? What role do expert-jury competitions play? And can artworks genuinely shift public attitudes?

Prof. PaedDr. Radek Horáček, Ph.D., is a prominent figure in Brno's cultural scene and the author of numerous academic publications. As early as 1998, he published Gallery Animation and Art Mediation - the first book in the Czech Republic to address the transmission of artistic experience from cultural institutions to the general public. He has been based at the Department of Art Education at Masaryk University's Faculty of Education since 1990, has completed several international residencies, and serves on the Scientific Council of Brno University of Technology, the Arts Council of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts Faculty of Music, and the Cultural Advisory Board of the City of Brno.
